Forty-six entries took to the historic, 1/4 mile oval, and Derek started his night by racing to a 2nd place finish in his heat race, which locked him into the 6th starting spot for the main event. In the feature, against a star-studded field of competitors he advanced to a 3rd place finsih behind race winner, Devin Gilpin, and Jeff Babcock.

1September 14th, 2013 - After a few weeks away from the track Derek Groomer was loaded for war on Saturday night as he traveled to Lawrenceburg Speedway (Lawrenceburg, Indiana) for the $4,444-to-win, Merrill Downey Memorial.

With a big payout on the line it was no big surprise that a talented field of 66 entries filled the pit area. Derek started his night on a strong note by winning his heat race to transfer to the dash. In the dash Groomer recorded a 2nd place finish.

For the feature Derek started in the 14th position and would go on to advance to a 7th place finish at the checkered flag.
